## What is in a Thermacell, and who registered it

Thermacell's [ingredients and safety page](https://www.thermacell.com/questions-by-topic/ingredients-safety) says its rechargeable cartridges "use metofluthrin as the repellent active ingredient" and "the fuel powered repellers use allethrin." Both are synthetic pyrethroids. On its [how-it-works page](https://www.thermacell.com/how-it-works), Thermacell says both actives "have been reviewed and registered by the EPA for their intended uses as spatial repellents."

That makes them a different kind of product from the skin repellents the CDC lists. DEET, picaridin and the rest go on you; a Thermacell makes a zone of air mosquitoes avoid. Thermacell says the device is "designed to repel mosquitoes, not kill them," though mosquitoes held in an enclosed space with no airflow may be knocked down.

**Key point:** every Thermacell listing here names mosquitoes, and none names ticks. Thermacell says it cannot advertise its allethrin platform against other insects until the EPA approves those claims. ## The zone: 20 ft, 15 ft or 10 ft

Rechargeable E-ZoneGuard Patio and Adventure models are rated for a 20 ft zone. Thermacell's rechargeable support page says the repeller starts building it within minutes but "should be allowed to run for at least 15 minutes" for the full zone.

Fuel models are rated for 15 ft. Thermacell's support pages tell you to "remain within approximately 7.5 feet of the repeller," which is the same thing measured from the middle. The Radius is smaller again: Thermacell says maximum repellency is within 10 feet, about 110 sq ft.

Wind is what shrinks all of them. Thermacell says the repellers work best "where there is minimal air movement, such as decks, yards, and campsites," to place the unit close to the ground in still air, and to put it upwind of the area you want to protect when there is a breeze. Strong, steady wind "may reduce the overall effectiveness."


## Refills: the repeat cost

The repeller is a one-time purchase. What you keep buying is repellent.

**Rechargeable models** use liquid cartridges. The E-ZoneGuard 120-hour pack is three 40-hour cartridges, per the listing, and fits every E-ZoneGuard repeller, the Radius included, per the listings. At three hours an evening, one cartridge lasts about 13 evenings, so a summer of nightly use goes through two or three packs. Thermacell says a sealed cartridge keeps for about three to four years.

**Fuel models** use two consumables. The Fuel-ZoneGuard 120-hour pack contains 30 repellent mats rated for 4 hours each and 10 butane cartridges rated for 12 hours each, per the listing. Mats change color when spent, so you can see when to swap one. The Backpacker uses its own mats and a 70/30 butane-propane stove canister instead.

## Charging on a trip

Rechargeable run time is also recharge time. Thermacell's rechargeable support page says the E55 and EX55 run up to 5.5 hours and take about 5.5 hours to charge fully, while the E65 and E95 docks can charge in as little as 2 hours.

Away from an outlet, Thermacell says the Radius "can absolutely be charged with a portable power bank or solar charger," as long as the source gives no more than 5V and at least 1A. For a long weekend, bring a spare cartridge and a power bank, or pick the fuel-powered Backpacker, whose run time depends only on how many mats and how much gas you carry.

## Where not to use one

From Thermacell's own support pages:

- **Not indoors.** "Thermacell products are not intended for indoor use." That includes a closed tent.
- **Not near water.** Thermacell recommends running battery repellers "10 feet away from a body of water," and says its products should not be applied to water, per the label.
- **Not in a fire.** Keep repellers "no closer than three feet from the fire."
- **Not in the rain.** Bring rechargeable units inside in rain or bad weather, even the IP54 Adventure.
- **Not worn.** Thermacell says using it as directed "does not include wearing the repeller."
