- Quick answer: Buy HotHands toe warmers in the 40-pair box: up to 8 hours per warmer, stuck under the toes on the outside of your sock, and enough for a season of cold mornings. For heat under the whole foot, HotHands insole warmers are rated up to 9 hours.

## Key takeaways

- One warmer per foot, over the sock, never on bare skin, and never while sleeping: those are HotHands' own warnings.
- Each warmer works once. A pair per person per cold day means a 40-pair box is 40 outings for one set of feet.
- The FAA says air-activated hand, toe and body warmers can go in carry-on or checked bags with no quantity limit.

Toe, insole and body warmers are the same iron-powder chemistry as a hand warmer, cut to fit a boot or stick to a base layer. They are for long, still hours in the cold: a tree stand before light, a bucket on the ice, a sideline in December. Choosing one comes down to where the heat goes, how many hours the maker rates it for, and how many you will burn through in a season.

**How we chose:** we did not test these warmers; we compared the hours and temperatures each maker publishes, read HotHands' and Grabber's directions and warnings, and kept only listings sold by Amazon.com and in stock on September 29, 2026.

A toe warmer runs cooler than a hand warmer. The [HotHands 6-pair toe warmer listing](https://wildprooflab.com/cold-weather/foot-and-toe-warmers) gives an average of 97°F and a maximum of 115°F, and HotHands' insoles average 99°F with a 113°F maximum. Grabber's [toe warmer page](https://grabberwarmers.com/products/toe-warmers) prints the same 97°F and 115°F.

## Toe warmer, insole or body warmer?

**Toe warmers** are small adhesive pads for the front of the foot. Buy them if your toes go numb and the rest of your foot is fine. They take the least room in a boot.

**Insole warmers** cover the whole sole. Buy them if you stand on something cold for hours, like ice, a metal ladder stand or frozen ground. They add a layer under the foot, so try them in your boots before you rely on them.

**Body warmers** are larger, longer-lasting pads for the torso. HotHands says to stick its body warmer to the inside of your outerwear or the outside of your base layer. A warm core is not a cure for cold feet, but it is the one to add when you are cold all over.

## How to put in a toe warmer

Kobayashi, the company behind HotHands, gives the directions on its [foot warmer page](https://www.kobayashihealthcare.co.uk/HotHands/112-/HotHands-Foot-Warmers): open the packet, peel the paper strip, and stick one warmer to the outside of the sock, underneath the toe area. Over the sock only, never on bare skin. The US toe warmer listings say the same: adhesive side to the bottom of the sock.

Keep the packet sealed until you need it, because the air starts the reaction. HotHands' listing says the toe warmers start the moment the package is opened. Grabber's listing says its warmers work best in an enclosed space that still has air, such as a shoe or boot.

Put them in at the truck or the cabin before you walk in, so you are not unlacing boots in the snow.

## The makers' warnings

Kobayashi's foot warmer page lists these, and they are worth reading before the first use:

- Do not use while sleeping.
- Do not use with sandals, clogs, slippers or ventilated footwear.
- Do not use more than one warmer per foot, or with another heating device.
- Do not use if you have diabetes, circulatory problems, nerve damage or paralysis.
- Do not use on anyone who cannot remove it themselves, such as infants and young children.

The same page warns that burns may occur without sensation, and to stop at once if the warmer feels uncomfortably hot. HotHands' US [FAQ](https://kobayashiamericas.com/faqs-hothands/) says young children, people with diabetes and older adults may have reduced sensation to heat. Grabber's listings say "Do Not Apply Directly to The Skin."

The CDC's [diabetes foot page](https://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/diabetes-complications/diabetes-and-your-feet.html) explains why: nerve damage "can also lower your ability to feel pain, heat, or cold." If that is you, ask your doctor what to use instead.

## What a season of warmers costs you in packs

Every one of these is single use. HotHands' [FAQ](https://kobayashiamericas.com/faqs-hothands/) says its warmers are made for one-time use and then go in regular household garbage, and Grabber's [FAQ](https://grabberwarmers.com/contact-faqs) says the same about its own.

So count days, not warmers. One person's two feet use one pair of toe warmers per outing, so the 40-pair box covers 40 cold days. A hunter who sits every Saturday and Sunday from mid-November to mid-January needs about 18 pairs; a family of four at a few December games needs a similar number.

If you are out every day, battery-heated socks may be the better buy over two winters. Our [heated gloves and socks guide](https://wildprooflab.com/cold-weather/heated-gloves-and-socks) compares them.

## Flying with toe and body warmers

The FAA's [PackSafe outdoor equipment page](https://www.faa.gov/hazmat/packsafe/outdoor-equipment) has an entry for "Hand Warmers, Toe Warmers, Body Warmers." It says disposable warming pads using carbon, charcoal and iron compounds "are not regulated as hazardous materials" and may go in carry-on or checked baggage, with no quantity limit. Grabber's listing calls its warmers TSA approved.

Fuel warmers are different: the same FAA page forbids hand warmers that burn flammable liquid or gas in any bag. Our [hand warmer guide](https://wildprooflab.com/cold-weather/hand-warmers-disposable-vs-rechargeable) covers those.

## When cold toes are frostbite

Toes that stay numb, turn white or grayish-yellow, or feel firm or waxy may be frostbitten, per the CDC's [frostbite page](https://www.cdc.gov/winter-weather/prevention/preventing-frostbite.html). The CDC says not to rewarm them with a heating pad or the heat of a stove, because numb skin burns easily, and that frostbite should be checked by a health care provider. A toe warmer counts as a heat source here. This page is not medical advice.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I put a toe warmer on top of my toes?

The makers say underneath. Kobayashi's directions put the warmer on the outside of the sock under the toe area, and the HotHands listings say the bottom of the sock.

### Why did my toe warmer go cold in my boot?

Most likely it ran short of air or reached the end of its rated time. Grabber says its warmers work best in an enclosed space with air, and its body warmer listing says to expose a warmer to air and shake it if the heat drops.

### Can I use a body warmer in my sleeping bag?

No. Kobayashi's warning against using its warmers while sleeping applies, and in a bag you cannot keep checking your skin. Use a bag rated for the night's low; see our [sleeping bag temperature rating guide](https://wildprooflab.com/cold-weather/sleeping-bag-temperature-ratings).
