Breathable fabric is what you want to sleep in, but it is not what you want facing 70 mph rain. When the tent is folded, the travel cover wraps the fabric, mattress and bedding and zips or straps to the base. Read that as a cover for a tent parked at home, at a long-stay camp or in a storage lot, over the tent's own travel cover, to slow UV and dust wear. Drawup's listing asks buyers to "double check your tent dimensions against the cover size before ordering." Measure your closed tent's length, width and height with the travel cover on, and allow for the ladder and any awning mounted on the base. **Pro tip:** if the tent stays on the vehicle between trips, a second cover over the travel cover, or parking in shade, is cheaper than a new travel cover once UV has made the PVC brittle. ## Rain: the rainfly and the cover A soft-shell tent has two rain layers: its own rainfly, which stays on the tent when it is open, and the travel cover, which only goes on when it is closed. Neither replaces the other. If the rainfly tears or loses its coating, buy the replacement from the tent maker, since fly shapes and attachment points are model-specific. That is fine for the drive. It is not fine for days. A split zipper on the highway is how covers tear. - **Straps:** if your cover also uses straps or buckles, tuck the tails.
