## What UPF 50+ buys you, and what shade cannot do

"A UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays and allows two percent (1/50th) to penetrate," says the Skin Cancer Foundation's page on [sun-protective clothing](https://www.skincancer.org/skin-cancer-prevention/sun-protection/sun-protective-clothing/). The same number applies to a canopy. Every shelter here claims at least UPF 50+; Neso goes further and says its fabric tested between UPF 185 and 500 in the lab.

Shade stops the sun from above, not the light coming off the ground. "Water, snow and sand reflect the damaging rays of the sun," says the EPA's [sun safety tips](https://www.epa.gov/sunsafety/sun-safety-tips), which also note that UV is strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Under a canopy on bright sand you still need sunscreen on your face and legs.


## How each type holds in the sand

A shelter is only shade while it stays up, and the three types anchor differently:

- **Tensioned shades (Neso).** No stakes: four bags filled with sand pull the fabric tight. Neso's [setup page](https://www.neso.com/pages/beach-tent-setup) says to overfill each bag to "about the size of a basketball" and 20 lb, pull them into an X, and not to bury them, because that "puts too much pressure on the fabric." Neso's advice for wind is worth copying with any shelter: put the poles on the side the wind comes from, angle them into it, and lower the front edge so there is less fabric for the wind to catch.

## Why beach umbrellas have their own safety standard

Of the shelters here, only the Handy Beach umbrella claims a test to it: its listing says wind tunnel tested to 30 mph. The Sport-Brella gives no wind figure and no standard, so anchor it with every stake and cord in the bag. If gusts start lifting any canopy, take it down before the wind does.

## For a day of surf fishing

Anglers on the beach need something different from a family: shade you can see the rod tips from, that sets up alone, and that sheds a crosswind. The Sport-Brella's fold-down side panels and zippered windows let you close the windward side and keep the seaward side open. The Coleman Backpack's roll-up walls do the same job in a 7 x 7 ft box, and it carries on your back with bottle pockets.

## When to pack up

A shelter is sun protection, not weather protection.
