Bug Bite Relief (2026): What Stops the Itch

An itchy bite on a camping trip leaves you four ways to calm it: an ice pack, a hydrocortisone cream, an antihistamine, or a gadget that works by suction or heat. Campers, anglers and parents packing a first-aid kit have to choose which to carry, and only the first three are on dermatologists' list.

How we chose: we did not test these; we started from the American Academy of Dermatology's advice, read each drug label and maker's instructions, and kept only listings sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 29, 2026.

What dermatologists say to do first

The American Academy of Dermatology's bug bite advice is short. For bites that itch, "apply an ice pack or an over-the-counter anti-itch cream, such as hydrocortisone," or take an over-the-counter oral antihistamine. To reduce swelling, use an ice pack. For painful bites such as a bee sting, take an over-the-counter pain reliever and follow the label.

That puts the two creams here first. Suction tools and heat pens are not on the AAD's list, so their claims are the makers' own.

Creams and gels: hydrocortisone or diphenhydramine

Hydrocortisone is a mild steroid. The Cortizone-10 listing says its 1% formula relieves itch from minor skin irritation, inflammation and rashes, insect bites included, and is for adults and children 2 and older. Aveeno and Aquaphor sell the same 1% strength; the rollerball's advantage is that it goes on without touching the cream.

Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine, the same drug as in Benadryl tablets, here in a 2% gel you put on the skin. The listing says it relieves pain and itching from insect bites, for ages 2 and up, and no more than 3 to 4 times a day. It covers a lot of skin quickly, which is why we would pick it for a leg full of bites.

Suction: Bug Bite Thing

Bug Bite Thing says its tool relieves itching, stinging and swelling "by removing the insect saliva or venom left underneath the skin." Its instructions are to place the cup over the bite, pull the handles up until you feel suction, hold for 10 to 20 seconds, then push down to release. For children and sensitive skin, pull about halfway and hold 5 to 10 seconds.

The maker says it works best "as close to the 'noticed' bite as possible," and does not recommend it on the face or neck, where it may leave marks. Since there is no ingredient, there is nothing to run out of. We found no independent body that recommends suction; the AAD's list does not include it.

Heat pens: heat it and Beurer BiteX

Heat pens press a small hot plate against the bite for a few seconds. heat it, a German maker, says on its product site that the skin is heated "to around 51 °C," which it describes as local hyperthermia, and sets its lower age at 3, with self-use from 12. Its Amazon listing gives the same 124°F.

Beurer's BiteX listing gives 3 to 6 seconds of heat depending on which of two programs you choose, but no temperature. It calls the pen suitable for all ages. We would still follow heat it's age line for any heat pen: a young child cannot tell you in time that a plate is too hot.

When a bite needs a doctor

The AAD says that if you have serious symptoms after a bug bite, "such as a rash, fever, or body aches," see a doctor or a board-certified dermatologist and tell them about the bite. Bug Bite Thing's own page adds: "If you are having a severe reaction, seek medical attention immediately."

For a tick bite, the CDC says to see your doctor if a rash or fever develops within several weeks of removing it.

For mosquito-borne West Nile virus, the CDC's symptoms page says to seek immediate care for high fever, neck stiffness, confusion, muscle weakness or tremors.

Which one we would pack

Pack the Cortizone-10 rollerball in every first-aid kit.

Add Benadryl gel for a family trip where bites come by the dozen.

Carry Bug Bite Thing if you want a drug-free option and will use it right away.

Choose heat it if you carry a USB-C phone and want heat without batteries, or Beurer BiteX for a battery pen that works on its own.

Prevention beats all five. Start with DEET or picaridin on skin and a head net where black flies swarm.

Can I use Bug Bite Thing on a bee sting?

Bug Bite Thing lists bees and wasps among the insects it works on. The AAD's advice for a painful sting is an over-the-counter pain reliever, and anyone with a severe reaction needs medical help first.

Is hydrocortisone safe for toddlers?

The Cortizone-10 and Aveeno 1% hydrocortisone listings both say adults and children 2 years and older, and Aveeno's says no more than 3 to 4 times a day. For a child under 2, ask a doctor.

Does ice work as well as a cream?

The AAD lists an ice pack alongside anti-itch cream for itchy bites, and names ice as the way to bring down swelling. It costs nothing if you have a cooler.

Can I use a heat pen on my face?

Check the instructions for your pen. Bug Bite Thing specifically advises against using its suction tool on the face or neck, and heat it publishes separate instructions for each model on its site.
