Low or tall?
Low gaiters (Kahtoola's INSTAgaiter Low is 4.5 inches) wrap the shoe collar and laces. They keep grit, mud and pebbles out of trail runners and low hikers, and they weigh about 2 oz a pair. They do not keep a leg dry.
Tall gaiters (Kahtoola's NAVAgaiter Tall is 13.5 inches) cover the lower leg. They stop snow from packing into boot tops, keep wet grass and brush from soaking your pants, and shed rain that runs down your legs. They are what you want for snowshoeing, off-trail hunting and shoulder-season hikes through sleet.
Kahtoola's listings also name ticks among the things its gaiters keep out. The CDC's tick prevention page says permethrin can be used to treat boots, clothing and camping gear, and to check your body for ticks after being outdoors; a gaiter is a barrier, not a repellent.
What "waterproof" means on each gaiter
Gaiter makers publish less than jacket makers. Here is what each states:
- Kahtoola NAVAgaiter Tall GTX: a "three-layer GORE-TEX laminate" upper and a "polyurethane-coated ballistic nylon" lower with DWR, per Kahtoola's spec sheet for this model. The zipper is a water-resistant YKK AquaGuard.
- Kahtoola INSTAgaiter Low: stretch-woven nylon with a PFAS-free DWR finish that "deflects light moisture," per Kahtoola. Water resistant, not waterproof.
- Azarxis: 600D Oxford with "excellent waterproof: 6000mm," per the listing, with no test method named.
- Frelaxy Leg Gaiters: "900D waterproof-coated Oxford fabric," per the listing, with no figure.
- Frelaxy Trail Gaiters: no waterproof claim.
The NAVAgaiter's GORE-TEX upper is a breathable waterproof membrane. The coated Oxford gaiters give no breathability figure, so expect some condensation inside them on a long, warm climb.
Fit: the instep strap and the zipper
A gaiter that rides up lets snow in. The strap under the boot holds it down, and it wears out first on rock. Kahtoola's DuraLink strap is thermoplastic polyurethane, replaceable and warrantied for 1,000 miles, per its NAVAgaiter page. Frelaxy uses a three-layer rubber strap with metal buckles; Azarxis a TPU strap.
Front closures differ. Kahtoola uses side zips set off-center to ease pressure on the foot; Frelaxy and Azarxis use a wide hook-and-loop front with a drawcord at the top.
Size for your boot and calf with what you will wear under the gaiter. Azarxis's listing says to size up over ski pants or thick trousers.

Wearing gaiters in rain
In steady rain, wear rain pants over the top of a tall gaiter, not tucked into it. Water then runs down the outside of both and off the boot. Tucked in, the pants funnel runoff straight into the gaiter.
