Gear Repair Tape and Patches (2026)

A torn jacket, tent or sleeping pad can often be fixed on the spot if you carry the right patch, and the right patch depends on the fabric. Regular repair tape holds on nylon and polyester, silnylon needs a silicone adhesive, GORE-TEX has its own patches, and mesh needs mesh.

Here is what GEAR AID, which makes Tenacious Tape and Seam Grip, says each one sticks to, and what GORE-TEX says about patching its garments.

How we chose: we did not test these patches. We read GEAR AID's spec sheets and FAQs and the listings, and kept only items sold by Amazon.com and in stock on September 29, 2026.

Which patch sticks to which fabric

Nylon and polyester (jackets, packs, PU-coated tents, puffy shells): standard Tenacious Tape. GEAR AID's spec sheet lists nylon, polyester, vinyl, rubber, non-oiled leather and GORE-TEX fabric. Its tape FAQ adds canvas, TPU, EVA and PET plastics, Sunbrella and WINDSTOPPER.

Silnylon and silpoly: not regular tape. The same FAQ says standard Tenacious Tape "can be used on silnylon for a temporary emergency field repair." For a lasting fix, GEAR AID's Silnylon Patches use a silicone-based adhesive, and GEAR AID says they "bond to any silicone-treated fabric." It is the same logic as seam sealer: silicone sticks to silicone, as our tent seam sealer guide explains.

Oiled or waxed leather: GEAR AID lists only non-oiled leather for Tenacious Tape.

Bug mesh: the Mesh Patches, a piece of netting held by a ring of tape, so the patch still lets air through.

How to put a patch on so it stays

GEAR AID's down jacket repair guide and tape FAQ give the same steps for any Tenacious Tape patch:

1. Clean the area with isopropyl alcohol to remove dirt and body oils, and trim loose threads or feathers.
2. Cut the patch with rounded corners so it overlaps the tear by at least 1/2 in in every direction.
3. Press from the center out, smoothing bubbles and making sure the edges lie flat.
4. Heat, optional: an iron on medium or permanent-press, moderate pressure and circular motion for 30 seconds, or 30 minutes in a dryer on regular, per GEAR AID.
5. Wait 24 hours before washing. GEAR AID says full adhesion takes 24 hours, and the tape can be repositioned in that time without leaving residue.

Temperature matters in the field. GEAR AID's FAQ gives 50°F to 104°F (10°C to 40°C) as the best range for initial adhesion, so warm a patch in a pocket before sticking it on a cold morning.

Down jackets and sleeping bags

A small rip in a down jacket leaks feathers every time you compress it, so patch it as soon as you see it. GEAR AID suggests hex or mini patches for small holes and a strip cut from a 3 x 20 in roll for larger rips. The Mini Patches listing says they bond to nylon, polyester and GORE-TEX fabric with no heat or sewing.

Trim loose feathers and threads, per GEAR AID's guide, then patch. If the jacket is due for a wash, patch first and wait the 24 hours; our technical wash guide covers washing down afterward.

GORE-TEX garments: patch now, repair later

GEAR AID's GORE-TEX Fabric Patches are made from GORE-TEX fabric, per the listing, and its spec sheet says you can peel and stick them or use an iron to increase the bond.

Read GORE-TEX's own position before you do. Its repairs page says patches "are NOT permanent repair, they're a bandage," and that "patched garments are still considered damaged and are not eligible for coverage under our GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY promise." For a permanent repair it points to a Gore authorized repair center or the brand that made the garment.

So for a jacket still under that promise, contact the brand first; use a patch when you are out on the trail and need to stay dry today.

Seam Grip WP: glue for holes, seams and pads

Tape covers a hole; Seam Grip WP fills and bonds. GEAR AID's Seam Grip WP page says it seals seams and patches torn fabric on nylon, polyester, canvas and vinyl, and the listing adds sleeping pads. It cures in 8 to 12 hours, longer in dry air, per GEAR AID.

Seam Grip WP will not work on silnylon, per GEAR AID; use Seam Grip SIL there.

GEAR AID's Camp & Trail kit packs 0.25 oz of Seam Grip WP, four 2.5 in hex patches, an applicator and two alcohol wipes in a reusable tin weighing 2 oz filled, per its kit page.

• Tenacious Tape for jackets, packs, stuff sacks and PU-coated tents.
• Silnylon Patches instead, or as well, if your shelter is silnylon or silpoly.
• Mesh Patches if your tent has a bug-mesh inner.
• Seam Grip WP Camp & Trail kit for sleeping pads and seams.
• Sewing Kit for a pulled strap or split seam; GEAR AID lists thread, two needles, pins, a seam ripper and a thimble in a 1 x 3 in tube.

When to hand it to a repair shop

Tape is for small holes and tears. For a GORE-TEX garment, GORE-TEX says a permanent repair needs "a Gore authorized repair center, or ... the manufacturing brand," and lists repair centers by region on its repairs page. It also says that "acting quickly when damage occurs" is the best way to keep a garment covered by its promise.

For other gear, check the maker's warranty before you glue anything. A permanent adhesive like Seam Grip cannot be taken off again: GEAR AID says that on clothing its adhesives "are permanent and cannot be removed," per its Seam Grip tips.

How often you restock

Repair gear is used up by the incident, not by the calendar.

Patches are single use: the Mini Patches listing counts 12, the GORE-TEX pack 2, the Silnylon pack 2. An opened tube of Seam Grip WP keeps longer in the freezer, per GEAR AID's Seam Grip tips, which say to push the contents to the neck and cap it first. Check the kit before each season and replace what you used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take Tenacious Tape off later?

Yes, standard Tenacious Tape is listed as removable, and GEAR AID says it can be repositioned within 24 hours without sticky residue. The Silnylon Patches are listed as not removable.

Will Tenacious Tape stick to a sleeping pad?

GEAR AID lists TPU among the materials it sticks to, and its Seam Grip WP Repair Kit listing says the included hex patches are for sleeping pads, packs and inflatables. Clean the spot with alcohol first.

Does a patch keep a GORE-TEX jacket waterproof?

GEAR AID sells its GORE-TEX Fabric Patches as a waterproof repair for jackets, pants and waders. GORE-TEX still calls any patch a bandage and recommends a permanent repair by an authorized center.
