UV Protectant Spray for Tents, Kayaks and Vinyl (2026)

Sun damage is slow and invisible until a fly tears or a kayak's color chalks. A UV protectant slows it, but the three makers here each design for different surfaces, and the wrong one on the wrong material does nothing or leaves a mess.

How we chose: we did not test these products. The picks come from the makers' directions and the Amazon listings, and each was sold by Amazon.com and in stock on September 29, 2026.

What sun does to tents and hulls

Nikwax puts a number on it. Its SolarProof page says tent and pack fabrics "in two weeks of continuous exposure, can lose up to half of their strength," and that UV also destroys the water-repellent finish.

MSR's FAQ calls UV radiation "a tent's biggest enemy." A tent used at high altitude in extreme sun may last only a few months, it says, while one used occasionally lasts for years.

Plastics and vinyl fail another way. GEAR AID's UV protectant tips explain that the oils that keep vinyl, neoprene and plastics flexible, called plasticizers, migrate out over time; sun speeds this up, and the material cracks, fades and chalks.

Which spray for which surface

Kayaks, canoes and vinyl: 303 Aerospace

303 lists vinyl, plastic, synthetic and natural rubber, PVC, gel-coat fiberglass and finished leather, and names Hypalon inflatables and wet and dry suits. The 303 FAQ also says the Aerospace, Marine and Automotive bottles hold the same formula under different labels, so buy by size.

How it goes on matters. 303 says to use it on a clean, dry surface, out of direct sun, and to wipe it "thoroughly and completely dry." The product "does not air dry." Too much product streaks, often only after the next rain; 303's fix is hot water, then a thinner coat buffed in.

303 claims it blocks "up to 98% of UV radiation if used properly and consistently," and says there is no industry UV rating for protectants the way SPF rates sunscreen. Take the figure as the maker's.

Tent flies: Nikwax SolarProof, not 303

303's own FAQ answers the fabric question: "No, we do not recommend using on fabrics since this is a water-based formula." Its Aerospace page also rules out canvas.

For a nylon or polyester tent, Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof is the spray made for the job. Nikwax says to clean first with Tent & Gear SolarWash, pitch the tent, spray the clean, wet fabric from 6 inches, wait 2 minutes, wipe off surplus with a damp cloth and air dry only. It gives a volume guide of about 1.7 fl oz (50 ml) per 10 sq ft (1 m²).

Nikwax claims SolarProof "can double the effective life of equipment." It gives no interval, so reapply when the fly stops beading water, which our DWR spray guide explains how to check.

Rafts, drysuits and waders: GEAR AID UV Protect

GEAR AID's spray overlaps with 303 on vinyl and plastic, but it also names nylon, neoprene and latex, and it air dries. GEAR AID calls it safe on "fabrics coated with urethane or silicone," and lists nylon tarps and awnings, kayak spray skirts, PFDs, and river rafts.

GEAR AID's cautions: test on a small patch first, do not use it on cotton or glass, and expect it to darken leather.

Rooftop tents: shell and canvas take different products

If your rooftop tent's hard shell is plastic or fiberglass (the maker's spec sheet says which), a vinyl-and-plastic protectant like 303 or GEAR AID fits it. The fabric body is often canvas or a poly-cotton blend, and 303 rules out canvas.

For canvas, Nikwax lists its SolarWash cleaner, which adds UV protection, for "cotton, canvas and all synthetic fabrics," per its SolarWash page. Check the tent maker's care sheet before treating the body, since some makers name their own products.

303's other fabric spray, Fabric Guard, is sometimes suggested for canvas. 303's Fabric Guard FAQ says it "does not provide UV protection directly"; it adds water and stain repellency.

How often you will buy more

Both vinyl protectants run on a monthly clock in summer:

• 303 Aerospace: reapply every 3 to 5 weeks, per the listing, or every 30 to 45 days, per 303's FAQ. A 16 oz bottle covers about 40 sq ft, per 303, so a long kayak treated inside and out goes through a bottle in a season.
• GEAR AID UV Protect: once every 30 to 45 days of sun exposure, per GEAR AID. For latex drysuit seals, after every dive and before storage. Gear stored out of the sun needs it less often.
• Nikwax SolarProof: no interval; 500 ml covers about 10 m² at Nikwax's rate, roughly one coat on a large backpacking tent fly.

The cheapest UV protection is shade: store boats and tents out of the sun, and strike a tent you are not using. Storing a tent dry matters just as much; see our mildew guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use 303 Aerospace on a kayak's deck lines and seat?

Yes, if they are rubber, vinyl or plastic, which 303 lists. Keep it off fabric seat covers; 303 says the formula is not for fabrics.

Does UV protectant make a surface slippery?

303 says Aerospace Protectant dries to a matte finish with no greasy residue, but its page warns not to walk on an RV rubber roof while it is wet. Wipe it fully dry before you step on a treated deck.

Does a UV spray help an old, sticky tent fly?

No. Stickiness is a breaking-down PU coating, which GEAR AID treats by removing the old coating and applying a new one. Our seam sealer guide covers recoating.
