Canopy Sidewalls and Weights for Wind (2026)

Sidewalls turn a pop-up canopy into a room: shade from low sun, a break from a cold breeze, some privacy at a campsite or a market. They also turn it into a sail. This page covers the walls and weights sold by canopy makers' own stores, the wind limits the makers publish, and the recalls on record.

How we chose: we did not test these walls or weights; we read the canopy makers' wind guidance and the listings, and kept only products sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock when we checked on September 29, 2026.

Straight-leg is the key word in every fit line. On a slant-leg canopy the roof is smaller than the spread of the legs, so a 10 ft straight-leg wall will not hang straight; buy a wall sold for slant legs.

What the canopy makers say about wind

Every canopy maker we read puts a ceiling on wind, and every one tells you to take the canopy down before you reach it.

E-Z UP's FAQ grades its frames: light-duty canopies for "calm to light wind conditions (up to 10-15 mph when properly anchored)," medium-duty for "moderate winds up to 20-25 mph," and heavy-duty for "wind speeds of 25-30 mph with proper anchoring on level ground." Then: "we always recommend taking down your canopy if winds become gusty or exceed these guidelines."

E-Z UP asks for "at least 22 pounds per leg," more for bigger canopies or more wind, and says to "never leave your canopy tent unattended while set up."

ABCCANOPY's wind guide sets its line higher: "If winds exceed 35 mph, it's best to take the canopy down." On sidewalls it says they "shouldn't completely enclose the canopy to avoid lift," and it recommends tying guy lines to the metal frame rather than the fabric.

Those figures are for canopies anchored the way each maker describes, on the maker's own frames. A generic sidewall does not change them; if anything it adds sail area.

A sidewall is a sail

Eurmax's zipper wall measures 10 by 6.6 feet, about 66 square feet of fabric for the wind to push. That is the point on a sunny afternoon, when it blocks low sun or a cold breeze, and the problem when a gust hits the flat side.

Three habits follow from the makers' advice:

• Wall the windward side only. Leave the downwind side open so air can pass through instead of lifting the roof.
• Weight before walls. Put the leg weights and guy lines on first, then hang the walls.
• Walls come off first. When the wind builds, unhook the walls, then drop the canopy to its lowest leg height, then take it down.

Weights and stakes

Stakes work in grass and dirt; weights are for sand, pavement and anywhere you cannot drive a stake. E-Z UP's 22 lb per leg is a floor, not a target. A 10x10 with four walls on is a bigger sail than the bare canopy E-Z UP is describing.

Sandbag-style weights ship empty. Fill them with sand or gravel at the site, and wrap them around the leg so they sit on the foot plate rather than hanging off the frame, where they can swing.

Setting up a walled canopy, in order

1. Open the canopy at its lowest leg height and stake or weight every leg.
2. Run guy lines from the frame corners, not the fabric, as ABCCANOPY advises.
3. Raise the legs to working height.
4. Hang the windward wall first, strapped to the legs and the top.
5. Add more walls only if the wind is light. Leave at least one side open.

Take it down in the reverse order: walls off, legs down, then the frame.

Which wall and which weights

If you own a Coleman 10x10 straight-leg canopy, buy the Coleman Sidewall. It is made for that frame, and the listing gives a UPF 50+ rating, which the Eurmax walls do not state in the same terms.

For most other 10 ft straight-leg canopies, the Eurmax Middle Zipper SunWall is the one to hang on the windward side. The center zipper means people can walk through the wall instead of around it, and it straps to the legs for use on its own.

The plain Eurmax SunWall is the simple way to block one side from low sun. The Eurmax Full Zippered Walls kit closes all four sides, with a door and a screen window, which suits a market stall or a changing room on a calm day.

For weights, the Eurmax bags are the ones that can reach E-Z UP's figure: up to 37.5 lb each once you fill them. The US Weight set is quicker, prefilled with concrete, but at 10 lb a leg it is under half of E-Z UP's minimum.

Canopy recalls on record

We searched the CPSC's recall database for pop-up canopies and gazebos. The recalls we found are about flammability, not wind, and none involves the products above.

• Active Leisure 10 x 10 folding canopies, sold only at Costco, were recalled on April 7, 2011 because they did not meet the flammability claim on their label; about 19,000 units.
• Wanda Technology 10 x 20 outdoor canopies, sold only at BJ's, were recalled on July 3, 2008 for failing a voluntary flammability standard; about 8,600 units.
• Quechua tents and canopies from Decathlon USA were recalled on October 17, 2006 because they might not meet the industry's flame-resistance standard; about 22,000 units.

The one wind recall we found is for a hard-top gazebo, not a pop-up. In August 2024, BJ's recalled about 32,500 Berkley Jensen cedar gazebos because "the gazebo's roof panels can dislodge in high winds," after 137 reports of panels coming loose.

The flammability recalls are the reason to keep any flame well away from canopy fabric. E-Z UP says its canopies meet the CPAI-84 and NFPA-701 fire-resistance standards; many canopy listings name no standard. Either way, a stove or grill belongs outside the canopy, not under it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a Eurmax wall fit my E-Z UP canopy?

Eurmax lists its 10 ft SunWalls as compatible with ABCCANOPY, Impact, E-Z UP and Caravan canopies, but only straight-leg frames. Check that your canopy top has the horizontal loops on the valance that the Eurmax full-wall kit attaches to.

Can I leave a canopy up overnight at a campsite?

E-Z UP says to "never leave your canopy tent unattended while set up." Overnight is when a front can come through unseen, so drop it to the lowest leg height or take it down before bed.

What fire-resistance standard should a canopy meet?

E-Z UP cites CPAI-84 and NFPA-701 for its canopies. If a canopy listing names no standard at all, it makes no fire-resistance claim you can check.

Are water jugs good canopy weights?

A gallon of water weighs about 8.3 lb, so it takes nearly three gallons per leg to reach E-Z UP's 22 lb. Jugs also swing on a rope, where a wrap-around bag sits on the foot plate.
