Mildew Remover for Tents and Gear (2026)

Mildew on a tent is a storage problem that shows up as a smell. Most of what fixes it is free: dry the tent within a day, never store it packed, and keep it somewhere cool and dry. What you buy is for the tent that already smells.

Mildew smell or a failing coating?

Check the fabric before you buy anything. GEAR AID's mold and mildew guide says an older tent that smells "similar to vomit or urine" usually has a polyurethane (PU) coating that is breaking down, often on the fly's underside or the floor. The coating feels sticky or flakes.

That is a chemical failure. An odor remover will not fix it; the old coating has to be scrubbed off and replaced, which our tent seam sealer guide covers. Mildew looks different: gray or black spots and a musty smell.

Step 1: wash it gently

GEAR AID's mildew guide starts with a wash: warm water in a bathtub, 2 fl oz of Revivex Pro Cleaner, and a hand wash of the outer fabric. It says not to scrub the underside of the fly, because that can damage or remove the PU coating. Rinse until the suds are gone and air dry completely.

Keep the soak short. GEAR AID's tent cleaning guide says to leave a tent in the water for no more than 5 minutes, since long soaks break PU coatings down.

For a canvas tent or a shelter too big for the tub, Nikwax sprays its SolarWash onto the pitched tent instead. The SolarWash page says it can go on wet or dry fabric, cleans, revives water repellency and adds UV protection, and suits cotton and canvas as well as synthetics.

Step 2: the microbe soak

Revivex Odor Eliminator, sold as MiraZyme until GEAR AID renamed it, does not cover a smell. The product page says its water-activated microbes remove odor, and it lists mildew and mold among the sources.

GEAR AID's directions for a tent:

• Add 1 fl oz for every gallon of water, enough to submerge the tent.
• Unzip every door and open the flaps.
• Soak for 5 minutes at most. Do not rinse.
• Air dry completely, away from sun and heat.

Heat kills the microbes and rinsing washes them away, per GEAR AID. The longer the tent takes to air dry, the longer they work. Use the mixed solution straight away: the spec sheet says within 72 hours of adding water.

What not to put on a coated tent

MSR's tent care page is plain about it: avoid dishwashing liquid, detergent, bleach and similar concentrated solutions, and never dry clean, machine wash or machine dry a tent. Any of those can strip its waterproof coatings.

MSR also warns that you cannot fully clean mildew out. Its FAQ says mildew stains "are permanent," cannot be removed "without potential harm to the fabric coatings," and are not covered by warranty. Aim for a tent that smells clean, not one that looks new.

Rooftop tent maker Roofnest takes a different line for its own canvas. Its condensation guide allows "a VERY light bleach solution," or white vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide, to lift mildew stains. That is Roofnest's advice for Roofnest tents. Follow the maker of the tent in front of you, and test any cleaner on a hidden patch first.

Drying: the 24-hour rule

Prevention is almost all timing. MSR says mildew can start forming on a wet, crumpled tent in as little as 24 hours, and warm weather speeds it up. If you break camp in rain, pitch or hang the tent as soon as you get home.

Roofnest gives rooftop tent owners a 36-hour window to dry a tent that was closed wet, and says to open and air the tent every 1 to 2 weeks even when it is not in use. More humid climates need it more often.

Canvas maker Kodiak Canvas, in its care and storage guide, asks for the tent to be spread out to dry within 72 hours of getting home. Of the three, MSR's 24 hours is the tightest, so use it as your rule for coated nylon and polyester.

Storage between trips

The stuff sack is for the trail, not the shelf. MSR says to store a tent somewhere dry and cool, out of direct sunlight, in "an oversized, breathable cotton bag or mesh duffel," and suggests a pillowcase will do.

Kodiak Canvas adds a warning about plastic: bags and airtight tubs trap moisture, and an uninsulated garage with big temperature swings causes condensation. It suggests keeping the bag off a concrete floor.

GEAR AID's own storage list is short: air dry the tent when you get home, never store it damp, keep it somewhere dry.

How often you will buy these

• Odor Eliminator: GEAR AID rates the 10 fl oz at 20 applications and the 2 fl oz at 4. A tent soak at 1 fl oz per gallon uses more than a spray, so count a full tent as one or more applications.
• Pro Cleaner: 10 fl oz does 20 jackets or 5 sleeping bags, per the listing; GEAR AID uses 2 fl oz for a tent soak.
• Storage sack: bought once.

A tent that is dried and stored well should rarely need either bottle. The same Odor Eliminator treats sleeping bags, boots and wetsuits, which is how most owners use up a pouch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use vinegar on a mildewed nylon tent?

MSR's advice rules out concentrated cleaning solutions on its coated tents and names no vinegar method. Roofnest lists white vinegar as a bleach alternative for its canvas. For a nylon or polyester tent, use the maker's recommended wash and GEAR AID's microbe soak.

Does Odor Eliminator work on sleeping bags and boots?

Yes. GEAR AID's sleeping bag guide soaks a bag in 2 fl oz per 20 gallons of water for 5 minutes, with no rinse, and the listing names footwear, athletic clothes and pet gear too.

Will the odor soak affect the tent's water repellency?

GEAR AID does not say it does, and its guide describes Pro Cleaner as a wash that will not impact water repellency. If the fly stops beading afterward, restore it with a repellent spray; our DWR spray guide covers how.
