Quick answer
Buy Frogg Toggs if you move while it rains: its breathable suits and the 8,000 mm Stormwatch jacket and pant are made for hiking and fishing. Buy Helly Hansen's Moss PU raincoat and pants for hours of standing rain at work, where welded seams and a non-breathable skin are the point.

Frogg Toggs and Helly Hansen both sell rain gear to people who spend all day outside, but they solve the problem differently. Frogg Toggs makes light, breathable suits for hunters, anglers and hikers, and prints waterproof numbers on some of them. Helly Hansen's Moss line is rubbery polyurethane with welded seams for work, and its Seven J is a conventional shell. Which suits you depends on whether you are moving or standing still.
How we chose: we did not test this rain gear; we compared the makers' listings and product pages, and kept only pieces sold by Amazon.com and in stock on September 29, 2026. For more options on each side, see our guides to rain jackets for hiking and rain gear for fishing and outdoor work.
Two ways to keep rain out
Breathable laminates (Frogg Toggs, Seven J). A waterproof layer that lets some sweat vapor through. Frogg Toggs' Classic All-Sport and Ultra-Lite2 use a nonwoven polypropylene fabric; the Classic adds its DriPore Gen 2 middle layer. The Stormwatch jacket is 420-denier nylon with fully taped seams, per Frogg Toggs. Helly Hansen's Seven J uses its own Helly Tech Protection fabric.
Polyurethane (Helly Hansen Moss). The Moss raincoat's listing describes a Helox+ polyurethane shell on a polyester backing, with welded rather than sewn seams. The listing calls it "complete waterproof and windproof protection" and makes no breathability claim. Helly Hansen adds covered vent holes on the back yoke "to help shed excess heat."
That is the whole trade. Walking uphill in PU, sweat has nowhere to go. Standing on a dock for hours, sweat matters less and a solid PU skin is hard to beat.

Figures are from each Amazon listing. Neither brand names the test behind a figure, so the Stormwatch's 8,000 mm cannot be lined up against another maker's rating measured another way.
Durability and the brush test
Frogg Toggs is candid about its lightest fabric. The Ultra-Lite2 suit's listing says it is "not designed for rugged use, wandering through brambles or areas where sharp objects could tear," and points buyers who need that to its heavier suits. The 420-denier Stormwatch is the tougher option in this comparison from Frogg Toggs.
Helly Hansen's Moss pants come with a PU repair kit in the box, per the listing, so a nick from a hook or a nail can be patched on the spot.
Care
Frogg Toggs' care page says to hand wash rainwear in warm water with a mild detergent with no additives, hang to dry, keep it away from excessive heat and flame, and store it hung rather than bundled.
The Moss raincoat's listing says machine wash, hang dry. Whichever you own, a clean shell sheds water better; our gear care guides cover washing and re-proofing breathable shells.
Who each brand suits
- Buy Frogg Toggs if you hike, hunt or fish in the rain and keep moving, want printed waterproof figures on the Stormwatch pieces, or want an inexpensive backup suit in the car or pack.
- Buy Helly Hansen Moss if you stand in rain for hours on a dock, farm or job site, and want welded PU that nothing gets through.
- Buy Helly Hansen Alta if your job needs high-vis rainwear, after checking the label against your employer's standard.
- Buy the Seven J for a single sealed shell that moves between trail and town.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Frogg Toggs rain gear breathable?
Its nonwoven suits and the Stormwatch line are sold as breathable. The Stormwatch pant is the only piece here with a figure, 3,000 MVTR per the listing, and no test is named.
Should the rain jacket go over or under the pants?
Over. Frogg Toggs cuts the Classic All-Sport jacket as a full-length parka that hangs over the pants so runoff does not transfer inside, per the listing.
What does "welded seams" mean?
The seams are heat-bonded instead of stitched, so there are no needle holes to tape over. The Moss raincoat's listing says its welded seams "provide added durability and seal out moisture."
