Best Sun Hats for Hiking and Fishing (2026)

A sun hat is the one piece of gear that covers the places sunscreen misses most: scalp, ears, the rims of the ears and the back of the neck. For hiking you want brim and airflow; for fishing you also want neck cover, because light comes back up off the water. The deciding numbers are brim width in inches, whether there is a cape or flap, and whether a cord holds it on in wind.

How we chose: we did not test these hats; we compared brim measurements, UPF ratings and the test each maker names, and kept only hats sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 29, 2026.

Why 3 inches of brim is the line

The Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation sets the plainest rule we found: an adult hat needs a brim of at least 3 in all the way round, or a 3 in bill with a drape over the neck and ears. The fabric must also be at least UPF 50.

That rule sorts the table quickly. The Coolibar SafeShade (4.5 in front, 4 in sides) and Leo (3.9 in front, 3.1 in elsewhere) clear it on brim alone. The Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure and the Coolhead Zero IV get there with a brim plus a cape.

A baseball cap does not. It shades the forehead and nose, and leaves the ears and neck in full sun. If you must wear a cap for a helmet or a fly line, pair it with a hooded sun shirt; our sun shirt and hoodie guide covers hoods that fit under a cap.

What UPF 50+ means on a hat

UPF is measured through the fabric. The Skin Cancer Foundation's sun-protective clothing page says a UPF 50 fabric "blocks 98 percent of the sun's rays and allows two percent (1/50th) to penetrate."

In the US the lab test is AATCC TM 183, and labeling follows ASTM D6603. The test lab Hohenstein explains that TM 183 measures new, unstretched, dry fabric, which is why a maker that also tests wet fabric is worth noting.

Sunday Afternoons is the one maker here that names its test. Its FAQ says all its materials are "tested at independent labs in accordance with AATCC 183-2014," and that it works with a certified agency "to evaluate our fabrics wet and dry." Coolibar, Columbia and Tilley give the UPF figure but not the method on these listings.

A UPF number covers only the fabric. Mesh vent panels, like those on the Ultra Adventure, Bora Bora and Tilley, let air in and some light too, so they sit on the crown, where the brim shades them.

For fishing: neck cover and glare off the water

On a boat or a flat, sun reaches your neck from behind and bounces up off the water under the brim. A neck cape or flap is what fixes the first; sunglasses and a hooded shirt or neck gaiter help with the second.

The Coolibar SafeShade has the most neck cover of the six: a 10 in center-back flap under a 4 in side brim, per the listing. It is one size, 23.6 in round, with an elastic cord and toggle to take it in. Coolibar pitches it for "fishing, boating, hiking, work outdoors," and that is where the long flap earns its keep.

The Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure pairs a 6 in neck cape with what the listing calls a 3.25 in "reverse split brim," shielding "your face, ears, and neck." The chin strap and internal sizing make it the steadiest here in wind.

The Columbia Coolhead Zero IV Booney is the humid-day choice. Columbia gives it a 3.5 in brim, a chin strap and a cape that packs away. Its Omni-Freeze Zero fabric, Columbia says, has "blue rings" that "react with sweat to lower the temperature of the fabric so you feel cooler." We cannot confirm the effect; the sun protection is the UPF 50 rating.

For hiking: brim, airflow and fit

On a trail, a hat you can see past and that does not trap heat matters more than a cape. The Coolibar Leo has the most even brim for walking, 3.9 in at the front and 3.1 in at the sides and back, and comes in three sizes from 22.4 to 24 in, per the listing. The adjustable chin cord keeps it on when you look down a switchback.

The Tilley LTM6 Airflo is sold in fitted hat sizes such as 7 1/4, 7 1/2 and 7 5/8, so measure your head before you order. The listing says it is buoyant and has a DWR finish, which makes it a good paddling hat: it floats if the wind takes it.

The Columbia Bora Bora Booney is the lightest-feeling pick and packs into a bag, but its listing gives no brim width and it holds on only with a drawcord. We would keep one in the car, not wear it as the only hat on a boat.

Sizing and wind

Measure around your head about a finger's width above the ears, where the hat will sit. Coolibar prints circumference on the Leo listing (22.4 in S/M, 23.2 in L/XL, 24 in XXL); Tilley sells by traditional hat size; the SafeShade is one size at 23.6 in.

A hat that fits loosely will lift in a gust even with a cord. Take up the crown adjuster first (the Leo's rear drawcord, the Ultra Adventure's internal sizing), then use the chin cord for the gusts.

Care and how long a hat lasts

Sunday Afternoons says in its UPF explainer that a UPF-rated fabric keeps its rating "whether it's dry or wet," unlike sunscreen, which washes off. The water-repellent finishes on the Ultra Adventure and the Tilley are a different matter: DWR wears with use, so a hat that used to bead water may start to soak through before its UPF changes.

Tilley's lifetime guarantee is the only warranty stated on these listings. For the others, check the maker's care label before you machine wash a hat with a stiffened brim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a straw hat count as a sun hat?

Only if the weave is tight. The Skin Cancer Foundation's clothing page says densely woven fabrics protect better than loosely woven ones; if you can see daylight through the straw, UV gets through too. None of the six hats here is straw.

Is a darker hat better?

For the fabric, often yes. The Skin Cancer Foundation says dark or bright colors absorb UV instead of letting it through. A light hat can still be UPF 50+ if it was tested that way, and it will feel cooler in direct sun.

Can I wear a sun hat under a bike or climbing helmet?

Not a brimmed one. Wear a thin cap or a hooded sun shirt under the helmet, and switch to a brimmed hat at the stops.

How do I pick a size between two?

Go by the maker's chart. Coolibar gives inches for each size on the Leo; if you fall between, the crown drawcord can take up a larger size, but it cannot stretch a small one.
