Heated Vests and Jackets (2026): Zones, Batteries, Care

A heated vest or jacket is a lithium-ion battery in a zippered pocket wired to thin carbon fiber panels. What separates them is where the panels sit, how many watt-hours the battery holds and how honest the run time is. This page is for hunters in a stand, people who work or commute outside, and anyone who sits still in the cold, which is when heat from a battery matters most.

How we chose: we did not test these jackets; we compared the heat zones, battery ratings and run times the makers publish, read ORORO's and Venustas's care instructions, and kept only listings sold by the brand's own Amazon store and in stock on September 29, 2026.

All four ORORO garments use the same 7.38V 4,800 mAh battery, which works out to the 35.4 Wh ORORO prints. Every Venustas vest here ships with a 36 Wh pack, and the 12V jacket with a 54 Wh pack.

Heat zones: where the panels sit

A vest heats your core: every one here puts a panel at the collar and across the back, and most add one behind each hand pocket so you can warm your fingers without a separate warmer. Venustas adds panels over the shoulders; its women's fleece vest puts two on the chest instead of the pockets.

A jacket with the same four zones as a vest, like both ORORO classics, is a vest with sleeves: the arms are insulated but not heated. The Venustas 12V softshell is the only garment here with heating panels down both arms, which is why it needs the larger 54 Wh battery.

Battery watt-hours and honest run times

Watt-hours are the number to compare, because milliamp-hours mean nothing without the voltage. The FAA's lithium battery page gives the arithmetic: volts times amp-hours. ORORO's 7.38V 4,800 mAh pack is 7.38 × 4.8 = 35.4 Wh, and that is the figure ORORO prints.

Now read the hours. Every "up to 10 hours" on these listings is the low setting. Venustas's FAQ gives the full table for its standard battery in a 7.4V garment with five heating elements: 3 hours on high, 6 on medium, 10 on low. It adds that the figures are measured at room temperature, which is not a deer stand at dawn.

Venustas's 12V jacket listing is the only one that pairs each setting with a temperature: 144°F lasts about 3 hours, 130°F about 6, and 112°F about 10. If you need high heat from before light until noon, you need a second battery. ORORO sells its MINI 5K battery as a spare for any ORORO garment; the listing says it recharges in about 4 hours.

Vest or jacket?

Buy a vest if you already own a good shell or insulated jacket. It goes under what you have, it frees your arms for a bow or a shovel, and it moves between a work coat and a hunting parka. Buy a jacket if you want one garment for dry cold days, or if cold arms are your complaint. The ORORO classics are wind- and water-resistant softshells, per the listings; none of these is a rain jacket, and none gives a waterproof rating.

Heat helps most when you are still. On a steep walk in, switch the vest off or to low and turn it up when you sit; sweat in your base layer will cost you more heat than the battery can put back. A merino or synthetic base layer underneath moves that sweat.

How to wash a heated vest

Both makers publish the same routine, and both say the battery must come out first.

ORORO's help center says most of its heated apparel is machine washable: remove the battery, reconnect the cable and close the pocket, put the garment in a mesh laundry bag, and wash on a cold, gentle cycle without bleach. Line dry. ORORO says not to wring, twist, iron or tumble dry. Its gloves and scarves are hand wash.

Venustas's washing guide adds two points: tuck the plug into the battery pocket and zip it so the cable does not tangle, and hand wash anything insulated with down. It also says a dryer is not recommended.

Flying with a heated vest

The garment is fine; the battery follows lithium rules. The FAA's lithium battery page limits lithium-ion batteries to 100 Wh each, which covers every battery here, and allows two spares of 101 to 160 Wh only with airline approval.

The same page says spare lithium-ion batteries and power banks "must be carried in carry-on baggage only," with the terminals protected from short circuit. Once you unplug the battery it is a spare, and these packs double as phone chargers. Venustas's FAQ says the same: batteries in your carry-on. Check your airline too.

Using heated clothing safely

Heated clothing adds warmth; it does not replace dry layers or shelter. Do not rely on it for skin that is already numb. The CDC's frostbite page warns against warming frostbitten skin with a heating pad or heat lamp, because numb skin burns easily, and a heated panel against numb skin is the same risk.

Stop using any battery that swells or overheats. The FAA says damaged or recalled batteries may not fly at all, and it points to the CPSC for recall notices.

Shivering, fumbling hands, confusion and slurred speech are hypothermia warning signs, per the CDC's hypothermia page. If someone's temperature is below 95°F, the CDC says get medical attention immediately. This page is not medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wear a heated vest in the rain?

In light rain, yes: ORORO's men's jacket listing says its shell blocks wind and light rain. None of these gives a waterproof rating, so put a rain shell over the top in steady rain.

Can I use any USB power bank with a heated vest?

Only if it matches the garment's connector and voltage. The ORORO and Venustas vests here run on 7.4V packs with their own plugs; Venustas's FAQ lists its batteries at 7.4V, and ORORO's MINI 5K listing says it fits all ORORO heated clothing.

How long does a heated vest battery last before it wears out?

ORORO rates its battery for 800+ charge cycles, per the listing. At one charge per cold day, that is several winters of use.

Does a heated vest work with the battery dead?

As an ordinary vest, yes. The ORORO women's vest has FELLEX insulation and the ORORO men's vest a lightweight fill, per the listings, so they still insulate like a thin vest.
