Best Rain Pants for Hiking (2026)

Rain pants decide whether you arrive at camp with dry trousers and base layers after a day in wet brush. The differences that matter are how far the leg zips run, how the pants go on over boots, and whether the seams are sealed. Full side zips cost weight but let you add them without stopping to unlace.

How we chose: we did not test these pants; we read each listing and maker page, and kept only pants sold by Amazon.com and in stock when we checked on September 29, 2026.

Full side zips, three-quarter zips or ankle zips

The zip length decides when you can put the pants on.

• Full-length side zips (the two Marmot Full Zip pants) open the leg from waist to cuff. You can step into them wearing boots and gaiters, and open the top of the zip to vent on a climb.
• Three-quarter zips (the Threshold) run most of the way up the leg. Mountain Hardwear lists them "for ventilation and easy on and off over boots."
• Knee or lower-leg zips (the Frogg Toggs and the Antora) widen the bottom of the leg. Most trail shoes and many boots fit through.
• Ankle zips (the regular PreCip Evo) open only the cuff. Marmot gives an 11-inch ankle opening with a 12-inch zipper cover.

If your plan is to pull rain pants on only when the rain starts, buy full or three-quarter zips. If you put them on at the car in the morning, ankle zips save weight and fewer zips mean fewer places to leak.

Getting them on over boots

Measure before you buy. Unlace a boot, set it on the floor, and measure around its widest part, usually the heel and ankle collar together. Compare that with the opening the maker lists.

Marmot is the only maker here that publishes the number: 11 inches at the ankle on the PreCip Evo, with a 12-inch zippered cover. The North Face describes lower-leg zips and hook-and-loop leg adjustments on the Antora "to pull on over hiking boots." Frogg Toggs lists a zip to the knee and adjustable openings on the Stormwatch.

Inseam matters too. Rain pants that are too short ride up when you step high and let water run into the boot. Marmot offers the most choice: 30, 32 and 34 inches on the men's pants, and 29, 31 and 33 on the women's ankle-zip pant. The women's Full Zip comes in 29 and 31 only.

Seams, fabric and the one published rating

The Marmot pants are "100% seam-taped," per their listings, and the Frogg Toggs Stormwatch is "fully seam taped." Helly Hansen welds the seams on the Moss, which is PU fabric rather than a membrane. The Threshold, Antora and Storm Surge II listings do not say.

Only Frogg Toggs gives numbers: "8,000MM Waterproof rating, 3,000 MVTR Breathability rating" for the Stormwatch. No test is named for either, so they describe this pant only and cannot be set against another maker's figure. The Mountain Hardwear Threshold is the only 3-layer pant here. Outdoor Research's explainer on shell layers says 3-layer fabric is the most durable build, while 2.5-layer is lighter and more packable. On pants, that durability shows at the knees and seat when you sit on rock or slide down wet slabs.

Our picks by trip

For most hikes: the Marmot PreCip Evo Full Zip, in the men's or women's cut. Full side zips, fully taped seams, a PFAS-free DWR and a choice of inseams. It is the pant we would carry for a wet shoulder-season weekend.

For rough ground: the Mountain Hardwear Threshold, men's or women's. It is 3-layer, the three-quarter zips vent well, and it packs into its own pocket with a clip loop. Its listing does not state seam taping, so check with Mountain Hardwear if you plan multi-day trips in steady rain.

If your boots fit an 11-inch cuff: the regular Marmot PreCip Evo saves the weight of two long zips and has the widest inseam choice for women.

Over trousers or shorts: the North Face Antora, cut relaxed through the seat, hip and thigh, with lower-leg zips.

For camp and short walks: the Columbia Storm Surge II (women's) has a mesh lining and adjustable cuffs but no leg zips. The Frogg Toggs Stormwatch has heavy 420-denier nylon and a quick-drain cargo pocket. The Helly Hansen Moss is PU fabric with welded seams and makes no breathability claim; wear it standing around camp, not on a climb.

Brands we left out

Outdoor Research's Helium, Foray 3L and Aspire 3L rain pants were on Amazon only from a third-party store, not Amazon.com or Outdoor Research, so they are not carded here. We did not find a men's Columbia rain pant sold by Amazon.com when we checked.

Wearing and caring for rain pants

Put rain pants on before your trousers are soaked, not after. Wet grass and brush soak the lower legs first, and once cotton or synthetic hiking pants are wet under a shell, they stay wet.

On cold, windy days, wet legs chill fast. The CDC's hypothermia page warns that it can set in above 40°F when a person is wet from rain or sweat, with shivering, confusion and fumbling hands as early signs. If you see them, get the person dry and warm and get medical help.

Marmot's care label for the PreCip Eco jacket asks for a cold wash with liquid detergent, no fabric softener and a low tumble dry, per the PreCip Eco page. Check your own pant's label before washing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need rain pants if I wear gaiters?

Gaiters keep water out of the boot top and off the shin, but not the thighs and seat. In steady rain, or in wet brush above the knee, rain pants keep the rest dry, and the two work together.

Should rain pants be a size up?

Size for what goes underneath. The Antora is cut relaxed to go over trousers, per The North Face; the Marmots have elastic waistbands with internal drawstrings, so a looser size can be cinched.

Can I wear rain pants in hot weather?

You can, but you will sweat. The Marmot full-zip pants can be opened from the top to vent, and a poncho with bare legs is cooler still in warm summer rain.
