Soft rooftop bags fold flat when you get home, which is the point of buying one instead of a hard box. They differ in three ways that matter on the highway: how the seams are joined, how the zipper is protected, and whether the straps anchor to a rack or to the door frames. Before any of that, find out how much your roof can carry.

Check the roof rating before you pick a size

Every bag here can be packed heavier than some roofs are rated for. Thule's rooftop guidelines tell you to check the vehicle instruction manual or your dealer for the roof's dynamic weight capacity, which they define as the maximum weight permitted on the roof while driving.

The rack has its own number. The same Thule document says bars, feet and fit kits may carry different ratings, and "the component with the lowest weight capacity determines the rack system's maximum weight capacity."

Thule's support page on rack capacity puts the two together: the rack's limit is always subordinate to the car maker's recommended load, and the lower of the two applies. For a bag on a bare roof, the owner's manual figure is the only one you have.

Count everything. The bag, its straps and hooks and whatever is inside all sit on the roof. Weigh the packed bag on a bathroom scale before it goes up, and keep dense items (water, tools, canned food) inside the vehicle.

A loaded roof also moves the vehicle's center of gravity up. Take corners, crosswinds and emergency moves more gently than you would with an empty roof.

What keeps water out: seams, zippers and fabric

Water gets into a roof bag through three places: the seams, the zipper and the fabric itself. Makers use "waterproof" freely, but none of these five listings gives a hydrostatic-head number or names a test standard, so we compared how each bag is built instead.

Welded seams. The Rightline Gear Sport Jr and the FIVKLEMNZ both list welded seams; FIVKLEMNZ calls its process high-frequency welding. A welded seam fuses two layers of PVC, so there are no needle holes for water to find at highway speed.

Stitched seams. RoofPax uses polyester with what it calls "dual-seam technology" and a water-repellent double coating. RoofPax says its polyester is "tested and approved" for waterproofing but does not name the test. Stitching is lighter and folds smaller; it relies on the coating and seam construction to seal.

Zippers. The zipper is the usual leak. Rightline Gear uses a waterproof SZIP zipper on the Sport Jr, and its larger Range 2 adds a hook-and-loop zipper flap. FIVKLEMNZ covers its zipper with a double-layered flap, Rough Country calls its zipper sealed, and RoofPax doubles up with two zippers.

Fabric weight. Denier (D) measures yarn thickness, and heavier PVC resists abrasion from rack bars and branches. FIVKLEMNZ lists 840D PVC; Rough Country lists 500D PVC tarpaulin at 525 GSM. These are not waterproof ratings, and the two makers state them differently, so they are not a like-for-like comparison.

Pro tip: pack clothes and bedding in dry bags or trash-compactor bags inside the roof bag. If a zipper weeps in a long highway rainstorm, the second layer keeps sleeping bags dry.

With a rack or without one

With crossbars, rails or a basket, every bag here straps to the rack. Wrap each strap around a bar, not a fairing, and put the bag's anti-slip mat under it even on a basket floor. Rough Country's listing describes only this setup, so treat it as a rack bag.

Without a rack, the straps need anchors at the door openings. There are two approaches:

• Door frame clips or hooks (Rightline Gear, FIVKLEMNZ, RoofPax). A hook or clip sits in the door opening and the strap buckles to it. RoofPax's patented hooks go under the rubber door seal against the steel frame; its hook listing says to check that your seals peel down far enough to expose the frame before you buy.
• Straps through the cabin. Some bags loop straps through open doors and buckle them inside the car. RoofPax warns that inside straps may interfere with airbags and are illegal in some states. That is the maker's claim, and we did not verify it state by state, but it is why hook systems exist.

On a bare roof, the bag's anti-slip mat is doing two jobs: holding the bag in place and keeping grit off the paint. Wash and dry the roof before loading.

After the first 10 to 20 miles, stop and re-tension every strap; webbing stretches once it is wet or loaded. NHTSA's secure-your-load advice is the same for any load: tie it down and double-check it. Twist long strap tails a few times or tie them off; a flapping strap hums at speed and can wear through the paint.

Which bag for which vehicle

Bare roof, car or small crossover: the RoofPax 19 cu ft for the hook system that stays outside the cabin, or the Rightline Gear Sport Jr if a 10 cu ft bag will do and you want welded seams from a bag sold by Amazon.com.

SUV with or without rails: the FIVKLEMNZ 21 cu ft. It lists the heaviest fabric in the group and comes with its own door hooks, straps and mat. FIVKLEMNZ suggests 15 cu ft for small cars, 21 for SUVs and 30 for larger SUVs.

Truck or SUV with a rack or platform: the Rough Country 15 cu ft. It is the bag to buy when you already have bars and want something from an off-road brand, sold by Amazon.com.

Large SUV or van with room in the roof rating: the RoofPax XXL. Pack it with sleeping bags, pads and clothes, which are bulky and light, not with camp kitchen gear.

Pack the heaviest items low and centered, the lightest at the edges, and fill the bag completely. A half-empty bag flaps, and flapping wears seams and zippers faster than rain does.

Only if the car maker says the roof can take it. Thule's rooftop guidelines tell owners of vehicles with a glass or large panoramic roof to always check with the vehicle manufacturer first, and a soft bag rests its whole weight on the roof surface.

Is a soft bag or a hard cargo box better for overlanding?

A soft bag is better when you need the space only some of the time, because it folds into a sack at home and adds little weight to the roof when empty. A hard box locks and sheds branches better, but it stays mounted and its own weight counts against the roof rating every mile.

How do I dry a roof bag after a wet trip?

Unzip it fully and hang it open until both sides are dry before folding it into its storage sack. Folding PVC or coated polyester away wet leaves it to mildew in the sack.

Do the straps damage door seals?

They can if the hook edge is sharp or the seal is pinched. RoofPax says its hooks are double coated in silicone to avoid marking paint and are meant to sit between the rubber seal and the steel door frame so the door still seals. Check the seal after each trip.
