Rooftop Tent Anti-Condensation Mats (2026)

Wake up in a rooftop tent after a cold night and the underside of the mattress can be damp, even when the walls look dry. Leave it, and mildew grows there. This guide is for rooftop tent owners, and it explains where that water comes from, what a 3D mesh mat does about it, how to get one that fits your tent, and the drying routine that has to go with it.

How we chose: we did not test these mats; we read the tent makers' spec sheets and the Amazon listings, and carded only mats sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store and in stock on September 29, 2026. That left one: Thule's size L. Its S and M, and Tuff Stuff's mats, were out of stock or sold only by third-party stores, so buy those from the tent maker.

Why the underside of a rooftop tent mattress gets wet

Thule's anti-condensation mat page puts it simply: the air in a tent fills with moisture from "your breath, wet clothes and gear, or humidity in the air," and it condenses on cold surfaces, including the floor under the mattress. If the tent is not dried out, Thule says, mold or mildew can form on the underside of the mattress.

Tuff Stuff Overland explains why the floor is the cold surface. Its tents have aluminum floors, and its mat page compares the effect to "drinking ice water from an aluminum cup": body heat through the mattress meets a floor chilled by the night air, and water collects between them.

A rooftop tent's floor is a rigid base up in the night air, with a dense foam mattress pressed flat on it, so there is nowhere for that water to go. That is why rooftop tent makers, not ground-tent makers, sell a fix.

What the mat does

An anti-condensation mat is a layer of 3D spacer mesh, a springy open weave, that lifts the mattress off the floor. Air moves through it, so moisture that reaches the floor can evaporate instead of soaking into the mattress cover.

Thule says its mat is "made of high quality spacer mesh to help allow air to circulate under your mattress and allow moisture to escape," and that it adds about a centimeter of cushion. Tuff Stuff's is 1/4 inch thick and, it says, also puts a layer between your body heat and the cold floor.

It is not a dehumidifier. It will not dry a tent that was packed wet, and it does not replace airing the mattress.

Fit is brand-specific

Mats are cut to a tent's floor, and makers list which tents each size fits. Thule's three sizes, per its spec sheets:

• S (78.7 x 41.7 in): Approach S, Basin, Basin Wedge, Foothill, Tepui Explorer Ayer 2 and Low Pro 2.
• M (90.6 x 49.7 in): Approach M, Tepui Explorer Kukenam 3, Autana 3 and Low Pro 3.
• L (90.6 x 65.4 in): Approach L and Tepui Explorer Autana 4.

Tuff Stuff sells three: 48 x 56 in for the Original Ranger, Delta and Trailhead; 48 x 65 in for the Ranger 65; and 48 x 76 in for the Elite. Its soft-shell mats come as two pieces, one per half of the folding floor.

For any other tent, ask the tent maker first. A universal mat has to be trimmed to the floor, and one that bunches under a hinge can stop the tent folding flat.

Fitting one

Tuff Stuff's instructions are the most detailed we found:

1. Take the mattress out.
2. Lay the two mats on the two halves of the floor without overlap; "trimming may be necessary."
3. Fix the mats at the two front corners nearest the ladder, with self-adhesive tape or 2 to 4 self-tapping screws and wide fender washers, so the mat does not slide out when you open the tent.
4. Put the mattress back.

Thule's mats are cut to the tent's floor and lie under the mattress; before you close any folding tent over a mat, check that it lies flat at the hinge.

The mat is half the job: dry the tent

Mildew needs damp and time. The EPA's mold guide says "the key to mold control is moisture control," and that damp materials dried within 24 to 48 hours will in most cases not grow mold. That timeline applies to a mattress as much as a carpet.

• Every morning: open the windows and door, and prop the mattress up or fold back a corner to let the underside air while you make breakfast.
• Packing up wet: fine for the drive, not for the week. Open the tent at the next dry stop or when you get home.
• At home: open the tent fully, lift the mattress, and let the mat, floor and mattress cover dry before you close it for storage.
• Mildew already there: the EPA says to scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water and dry them completely, and that absorbent materials that have gone moldy may have to be thrown away.

Roof load

A mat is light, but everything on the roof counts. Thule lists 5.3 lb for its S mat, 6 lb for the M and 7.5 lb for the L. Thule's rooftop tent guidelines tell you to check the vehicle manual or dealer for the roof's dynamic load rating and say the lowest-rated rack part sets the limit. Add the mat to the tent, the tent cover and anything else up there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a mat made for another brand's tent?

Only if you can trim it to the floor and it still folds flat. Tuff Stuff's own instructions allow for trimming; Thule lists each size for named tents only. Measure the floor, not the mattress, and allow for the hinge on a folding tent.

Does a mat stop condensation on the walls?

No. Thule's page describes walls that "feel almost wet" after a cold night as ordinary condensation from breath, wet gear and humid air. Open the windows and vents for airflow; the mat only deals with the floor under the mattress.

Should I put a towel or blanket under the mattress instead?

A towel soaks up water and holds it against the mattress, which is the opposite of what the EPA's drying advice calls for. A mat works because it is open mesh that air can move through.
