Zipper Repair Kits and Zipper Lubricant (2026)

Big Agnes calls zippers the only moving part of a tent, and a zipper that sticks, splits or will not close is usually cheap to fix. The trick is telling the three faults apart: dirt, a worn slider, or damaged teeth. Only the last needs a professional.

Which fault do you have?

• Stiff, gritty or salty: the teeth are dirty. Clean and lubricate.
• The two sides split open behind the slider: the slider is worn and no longer squeezes the teeth together. Big Agnes's DIY repair page says replacing the sliders is "the simplest fix."
• Teeth bent, missing or the tape torn: Big Agnes says the whole zipper must be replaced. See the repair shop section below.

Stuck zippers: clean, then lubricate

Grit is the first thing to rule out. GEAR AID's Zipper Cleaner + Lubricant has a brush top that scrubs sand, dirt and salt from between the teeth and leaves a lubricating film. It contains no silicone or paraffin, per GEAR AID, and suits coil, plastic, nylon and metal zippers.

The wax sticks do the lubricating without the cleaning. GEAR AID's Zipper Lubricant, sold as Zip Tech until its rename, is silicone-free and made for metal, plastic and coil zippers, including watertight ones.

Go easy with either. YKK, the zipper maker, passes on this advice in its drysuit zipper care note: lubricate "with the zipper closed," along the teeth, because "excessive wax or sprays will attract and retain dirt." On a watertight zipper, wax only the outside of the teeth.

Split zippers: replace the slider

When a zipper closes but pops open behind the slider, the teeth are usually fine and the slider has spread. The fix is a new slider of the same size and type.

Find the size. GEAR AID's slider guide says the number is stamped on the back or the "nose" of the slider; if it is missing, call the gear maker. Jackets typically use #3 or #5, and tents, sleeping bags and other large gear #8 or #10.

Know the type. GEAR AID separates split zippers with a top stop, common on jackets, from closed-loop zippers sewn in at both ends, found on tents, bags and luggage.

GEAR AID's Zipper Repair Kit holds six sliders (#10 coil single, #8 coil double, #5 coil double, #5 coil single, #5 VISLON single and #3 coil single), a seam ripper, two needles, thread and 10 top stops.

How long a slider swap takes

On a split zipper, GEAR AID's method is about 5 minutes: remove the top stop with pliers (or cut it off a plastic VISLON zipper), slide the old slider off, slide the new one on nose-up, and crimp on a new top stop.

A closed-loop tent zipper takes 20 to 30 minutes, per GEAR AID. You unpick the stitching at one end, remove the old slider and any metal stop, feed the teeth into the new slider, then sew a new stop at the end. A double-slider tent door means doing it at both ends.

If you would rather not sew, FixnZip's slider installs with no tools or sewing, per its listing, and fits open-end, closed-end and watertight zippers. Its medium size (5 to 7) is listed for jackets, sleeping bags and tents, and the large (8 to 10) for canvas tents and boat covers. Big Agnes calls FixnZip "a great on-trail temporary fix," with a sewn-in slider as the permanent repair.

When the zipper needs a repair shop

Some damage is past a slider swap:

• Damaged or missing teeth. Big Agnes says the whole zipper will need to be replaced. Zipper Rescue's listing agrees that "missing teeth cannot be repaired."
• Watertight drysuit zippers. YKK quotes NRS: "A broken zipper cannot be repaired, and replacing one is very expensive."
• Gear under warranty. Contact the maker before you cut stitches. Big Agnes asks owners to submit a claim first, and says it will send replacement sliders anywhere, to be fitted by a seamstress or gear shop.

A shop that replaces a full zipper needs the gear in hand, so plan around the trip rather than on it; carry a no-sew slider in the meantime.

How often you restock

Lubricant is the only consumable here. GEAR AID says to use its cleaner "regularly" and gives no interval, so a sensible routine is after any beach, desert or saltwater trip and before storing a tent for the season. A 2 fl oz bottle does many zippers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the two-stick wax right for a drysuit zipper?

No. The listing says the two 0.16 oz hard wax sticks are for tents, luggage and packs, and GEAR AID sells a single 0.5 oz Soft Wax stick for wetsuits, drysuits and other watertight zippers.

Why does my tent zipper only stick at the curve?

A tent door's curve pulls the teeth at an angle. Hold the fabric taut and straight in front of the slider while you pull, which is the same slow, straight pull YKK describes for drysuit zippers.

Do I need a coil or a tooth slider?

Match the zipper. Coil zippers have a continuous spiral; molded-tooth (VISLON) zippers have separate plastic teeth. The GEAR AID kit includes both types in size #5.
