Quick answer

Give what gets used every trip and needs no size: a CO alarm or an R-6 pad for the car camper, super warmers and mittens for the winter hiker, traction boards or a small power station for the overlander, a dry bag set and a repair kit for the beginner, coated gloves and permethrin for the outdoor worker.

Buying for someone who camps, hikes or drives into the backcountry is easier than it looks, because the gear they run short of is the gear nobody buys for themselves: warmers, dry bags, a repair tin, a CO alarm. The twelve gifts below are grouped by the person, and each one links to the guide that chose it, so you can check the reasoning before you wrap it.

How we chose: we did not test these products; every pick comes from one of our guides, chosen from makers' spec sheets and listings, and each was in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store on October 3, 2026. We checked every brand against our CPSC recall database and left out anything on it.

Only the mittens and the gloves need a size. Everything else fits anyone.

The weekend car camper

Campground site at dusk with a picnic table, a hammock slung between bare trees and a grey dome tent in tall dry grass beside a lake
A campground weekend is where a thick self-inflating pad, a CO alarm and a repeller get used every trip.

A car camper carries weight the backpacker cannot, which is why the Therm-a-Rest BaseCamp is the gift here. Its listing gives an R-value of 6, past the 5.5 that REI's guidance sets for extremely cold ground, as our R-value guide explains, and self-inflating foam needs no pump. At 2 lb 8 oz it belongs in a trunk, not a pack.

For the camper who eats outside, the Thermacell E-ZoneGuard Adventure makes a 20 ft zone for up to 9 hours per charge, per the listing, and is rated IP54. Two facts from our Thermacell guide belong on the card: Thermacell names mosquitoes only, with no tick claim, and says to keep the repeller at least three feet from a fire.

The Kidde portable CO alarm is the one gift on this page that can save a life. The CDC's carbon monoxide page asks for battery-operated CO detectors near every sleeping area; on a trip, that means the camper, the cabin or the truck cab. It runs on two AA batteries and travels in the gear bin. Our tent heater and CO guide explains why the alarm comes before any heater.

The winter hiker

Hiker in a teal jacket and knitted bobble hat with a small pack, walking a snowy trail toward a snow-covered mountain bowl
Mittens with a liner and a muff full of warmers are what a winter hiker runs short of, not another hat.

Cold hands are what a winter hiker brings home, and the fix is a mitten. The Black Diamond Mercury Mitts pair a removable 170 g PrimaLoft Gold liner with a BD.dry waterproof shell, per the listing, and Black Diamond lists them for -15 to 0°F. Our mittens guide explains why to size them with a liner glove on. You need their glove size; the women's cut is in that guide.

HotHands Super Warmers are the safe stocking filler. The listing rates each one for up to 18 hours, they need no charging, and the FAA's PackSafe page says disposable iron-powder warmers are not regulated as hazardous materials, so they fly in either bag. Our hand warmers guide covers why we would not give a rechargeable one this year; see the recall note below.

A merino base layer is the other winter gift that lands, if you know the size. Our merino vs synthetic guide and layering guide explain what to look for; the balaclava guide covers the one piece that needs no size at all.

The overlander

Two people in camp chairs by a fire at dusk beside a dark 4x4 with an open rooftop tent, ladder down and string lights along the rack
An overlander's wish list is the gear that gets the truck out of trouble and keeps the kitchen sealed: boards, boxes and a battery.

An overlander already owns a vehicle, a tent and opinions. What they may not own is a way out of sand. The X-BULL traction boards are rated to 10 tons on flat ground and from -4°F to 140°F, per the listing. Give them with the rule our traction board guide takes from MAXTRAX's instructions: clear the snow or mud first, and never spin the wheels on a board.

The EcoFlow River 3 Plus is the small power station: 286 Wh of LiFePO4 at 10.4 lb with three AC outlets, per the listing. It runs phones, lights and a laptop for a weekend; a fridge needs the 1 kWh class in our power station guide. EcoFlow rates it to charge from 32°F up. The recalled EcoFlow is the Delta Max 2000, a different model.

The Front Runner Wolf Pack Pro twin set is the kitchen box for someone with a rack or drawer system. Front Runner says the aluminum latches seal against water and dust and the lids nest so a stack locks together; our camp kitchen boxes guide notes that Front Runner's own page says resistant, not waterproof. Roof-mounted gear is under what not to give.

The beginner

A beginner has a tent and a bag and no idea what gets wet first. The Sea to Summit Ultra-SIL dry bag set is three translucent roll-tops in 3, 5 and 8 litres with taped seams and a 2,000 mm waterhead, per the listing. Our dry bags guide puts them inside a lined pack and notes Sea to Summit's own line that they are not for paddling.

The GEAR AID Camp & Trail repair kit is the 2 oz tin that fixes the first puncture: Seam Grip WP, four Tenacious Tape hex patches, an applicator and alcohol wipes, per GEAR AID, and the listing says it repairs sleeping pads as well as seams. Our repair tape guide explains which patch sticks to which fabric and why Seam Grip WP needs 8 to 12 hours to cure.

If the beginner's tent came with thin wire stakes, a set of MSR Groundhogs from our tent stakes guide is the other small gift that changes a windy night. Send our rainy camping checklist along with any of these.

The outdoor worker

Someone who works outside in winter has had wet gloves since October. The SHOWA TEMRES 282 puts a polyurethane coating the listing calls 100% liquid-proof over an acrylic fleece liner rated to -58°F, with a rough grip for wet tools. The claim names no test, as our waterproof gloves guide notes, and the glove is sold one pair per size, so check the chart before ordering.

For a worker, hunter or landscaper in tick country, Sawyer's 24 oz permethrin lasts a season. The CDC's permethrin page says to use 0.5% permethrin on clothing and gear and never on skin; Sawyer rates each treatment for 6 weeks or 6 washes and gets about five outfits from a bottle. Our permethrin guide covers the order to treat things in and the warning about cats.

What not to give

Orange tent glowing from inside on a wind-packed snowfield at dusk, skis planted beside it and a rocky outcrop behind
On a night like this the warmth comes from the bag and the pad; a sleeping bag is a gift only when you know the night it is for, and a tent heater is never one.

A sleeping bag, unless you know the night it is for. A bag is matched to a temperature by its ISO 23537 Comfort and Limit figures, and the name misleads: men's and unisex bags are usually named for their Limit and women's bags for their Comfort, as our sleeping bag ratings guide explains. A "20°F" bag can be a 32°F Comfort. Ask about the trip, or give the pad.

A propane heater for the tent. Mr. Heater lists tents among the uses for its Buddy heaters; the CDC's camping carbon monoxide report says camping heaters "should never be used inside a tent, camper, or other enclosed shelter," and that opening flaps is insufficient. Our tent heater guide follows the CDC. Give the CO alarm instead.

Insect repellent for a baby under 2 months. The CDC's mosquito bite prevention sheet says not to use repellent on babies younger than 2 months, and no oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD under 3. For a new family, give a net for the carrier; our repellent for kids guide has the age rules by product.

A rechargeable hand warmer or heated socks, unchecked. The CPSC recalled about 1.5 million OCOOPA rechargeable hand warmers on July 30, 2026, after one death, and heated socks from 32 Degrees in April 2026 and Fieldsheer in August 2025. Check the model against the notice, or give the air-activated warmers above.

Anything for the roof without the owner's manual. A cargo bag or awning adds to the roof load, and Thule's rooftop guidelines say the vehicle manual's dynamic roof capacity sets the limit. Our rooftop cargo bags guide explains how to read it.

Whatever you choose, include a gift receipt. The FTC's online shopping advice is to read a seller's return terms before paying; our Black Friday outdoor gear guide covers how to check the seller and the price in November.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you give a camper who already has everything?

The things they use up or never replace: super warmers, a permethrin bottle, a repair tin, a dry bag set. A CO alarm is the one item many experienced campers still do not own.

Do any of these gifts need a size?

Only the mittens and the work gloves. Black Diamond and SHOWA both publish size charts on their listings; check a glove they already own before ordering.

Is a power station a safe gift?

Yes, from the brand's store or Amazon.com, once you have checked the model against the CPSC's notices. The River 3 Plus is not among the recalled stations and makes no exhaust, which is why it can sit inside the vehicle while a generator cannot.

Can I give a Thermacell to someone who hikes in tick country?

As a campsite gift, yes; as tick protection, no. Thermacell's listings name mosquitoes only and make no tick claim, so a hiker in tick country still needs a skin repellent and treated clothing.
