Quick answer
The Garmin Enduro 3 is our pick for long trips: Garmin quotes 120 hours in GPS-only mode and 320 with solar, plus preloaded topo maps. The Garmin Instinct 3 Solar gives solar top-up and TracBack without topo maps; the COROS Apex 4 and Suunto Vertical 2 add offline maps without solar.
Our picks
A GPS hiking watch is only as useful as its battery on day three. Makers quote hours for each GPS mode, and the spread is huge: the same watch can last 60 hours or several weeks depending on how often it fixes your position. This page compares those numbers from each maker's own spec pages, checked on October 1, 2026.
How we chose: we picked watches with published battery tables, sold by Amazon.com or the brand's own store, and checked stock on October 1, 2026; we have not tested them. Many watch listings on Amazon come from third-party sellers who may be grey-market, without the maker's US warranty; we left those out. Watch firmware and spec pages change often, so check the maker's page before you buy.
Why one watch has six battery figures
Battery life on a GPS watch depends on how many satellite systems it listens to and how often it records a point. Garmin's Enduro 3 battery table shows the range: up to 120 hours in GPS-only mode, 80 with all satellite systems, 60 with all systems plus multi-band, and 210 in Max Battery GPS mode.
Multi-band and all-systems modes cost battery but help under tree cover and between cliffs. GPS-only is the long-life setting for open ridges.
Makers do not name modes the same way. COROS calls its modes Endurance, High and Max; Suunto uses Performance and Tour. Compare the closest equivalents, not the biggest number on each box.

Sources, each read on October 1, 2026: Garmin's Instinct 3 Solar battery table, the COROS APEX 4 specs, the COROS NOMAD specs and Suunto's Vertical 2 page. The APEX 4 listing title says "41 Days Battery Life"; COROS's spec page gives 24 days of daily use for the 46 mm, so we used the spec page.
What the solar numbers assume
Garmin's footnotes say the solar figures assume use outside in 50,000 lux, and for smartwatch mode, all-day wear with 3 hours a day in that light. That is bright, open sun. On a forest trail or under a sleeve, the watch gets far less.
Treat the solar column as a bonus on open, sunny trips, and plan your charging around the plain number.
Expedition and Tour modes for multi-day trips
Garmin's Expedition activity records one GPS point an hour and turns off all sensors and the phone connection. You get a rough line of where you camped and walked, not a detailed track. Both Garmins here have it.
Suunto's Tour mode reaches 250 hours on the Vertical 2 by lowering GPS accuracy and turning heart rate off, per Suunto. The COROS spec pages list no equivalent long-trip mode for these two models.
Maps and the way back
The Garmins and the COROS watches can lead you back along your recorded track. Garmin's Back to Start page offers TracBack along your recorded path or a straight line to your start. COROS lists Back-To-Start and a deviation alert on both its spec pages.
Maps are where the watches differ. The Enduro 3 manual's map page describes topographic contours and a Map Manager for downloads. The Instinct 3 manual describes your location, route line, names and symbols, but no contours.
COROS lists downloadable global topo and landscape maps for both its watches. Suunto says the Vertical 2 has free offline maps.
A watch map is small. Carry a paper map and compass as well, and know how to use them before the battery runs out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which GPS mode should I use for a day hike?
The most accurate one you can afford on battery. Even the Instinct 3 Solar's multi-band mode runs 34 hours on the 50 mm, per Garmin, far longer than any day hike.
Do GPS watches work without a phone signal?
Yes, for position and recorded tracks; the watch reads the satellites itself. Features like Garmin's incident detection need a paired phone with coverage, per the Instinct 3 listing.
How much water can these watches take?
The Garmins are rated 10 ATM and the Vertical 2 to 100 m. Both COROS watches are 5 ATM, which COROS says suits surface water activities but not diving.
